Oh That Runner’s High!

Work. Work. Work.  Things have been super stressful at work and school.  I have had two tests this week and next week I have an exam Monday, another exam Tuesday and a quiz on Thursday!  I was on the verge of melt down after my Anatomy and Physiology lecure today.  I looked at my schedule for next week and realized that there is just no time to study as thoroughly as I need to study.  Then, I though of how much time I will have to spend with my books instead of with my daughter.  I had an hour before I had to head to work so I considered using that time to study.  But, I couldn’t even concentrate with my mind reeling.  Luckily,  I remembered how Mallard calmed his mind last night.  He went for a run!  When he was finished he said he felt a true runner’s high.   You see, Mallard has been trying to give up his nightly (yes, nightly) nightcap(s).  It’s just not good for his body everynight. He has been using exercise to destress instead.  I’m so proud!! So, today when I needed to calm my emotions and clear my mind, I decided to walk down to the student fitness center aka The O’Connor Center and try my running legs!  Recently, I mentioned that I am easing back into my workout routine.  I started with yoga, pilates and resistance training.  I hadn’t tried to run again though.  I hadn’t really run since befor I had been pregnant.  I was such a new runner that I was advised not to do it during my pregnancy.  I missed running so much.  After Snuffy was born, my workout was all about abs and the eliptical because I wanted to work my whole body in the 20 mintutes that I had at the gym.   So, today was a big deal to me.   I suppose I was a little afraid that I wouldn’t be able to run again… I’m not sure why.   I didn’t go very far or very long today.   My fastest pace was only 5.8 which I would call jogging rather than running.  I had to use the Galloway Method.    But I rediscovered my runner’s high!! I felt amazing afterward!  I feel confident that I can build my endurance and speed.  What a sense of relief!  I would hardly call myself a runner.   But, I can’t wait for my next “run”!! I thanked Mallard for the inspiration.  He has had a heavy workload lately which means after a ten hour day, which is short for him, he brings work home as well.

Snuffy helps…

Poor guy.  I baked him some comfort to help him cope.

What do you do to relieve stress?

I had at least 10 bananas in our freezer for oats, banana soft serve and baked goods.  I put 5 of those bananas to good use!  I set them out to thaw before I left for work in the morning.

True Story: when I lifted my cookbook from the cabinet, it fell open to this page!

Crazy!  I’m pretty sure it just fell open to this page because I use this recipe for ‘Nana Bread so often.

The only change I made to the recipe was my use of turbinado in place of regular sugar.   It was a big hit with Mallard.  Let’s see, I made it yesterday and today there are 2 slices left!

Do you have cookbook that you have “loved to pieces”?

Things tend to get a bit messy in the kitchen when I bake with Snuffy so  I had to do some cleaning after the bread came out of the oven.

Thank goodness Snuffy was able to help!

Thanks for reading!!

Way to go to get back into the swing of running! Whatever it is that feels good and works, go for it! For me it’s 80% yoga, 20% running. That’s what I do to de-stress. Also make things in the kitch, read books/magazines, zone out on my computer, shop :)

Your nanna bread looks soooo good! Great job!

Yum, I love banana bread! So Mallard is a Cleveland Browns fan? That’s interesting, considering your guys live in Cincinnati, but hey, it’s cool!

Good for you for re-discovering your runners high. I used to be a big runner, but my body doesn’t like it anymore (especially my feet), I wish my body didn’t react to bad to running! I do the elliptical now instead, less pounding and it is still a great workout!

Oh yay for your run girl! That’s fantastic! I always love the first run after a lull. So refreshing! You are the baking queen lately, babe–so fun…and delicious! Hope you have a very happy Friday! xoxo

Yay for your exercise high! I’m definitely not a runner but I do love the feeling after a nice sweaty workout!

My mom has this cookie cookbook and it is torn apart from us using it so much! It’s a good one :)

Running is the ultimate destressor. So is rolling the windows down rocking out to an amaazing song totally off key and being laughed at by the other drivers. LOL I’m a ridiculous blonde but life is too short to take it too seriously ;)

Aww, I’m sorry you’ve been feeling stressed! It can feel so overwhelming sometimes to look at your calendar and see every little thing that needs to be done. I always try to zero in on one thing at a time so I don’t get panicky. Working out is my ultimate stress reliever too. I love cardio, but oddly weight lifting does it best for me! I think it’s because I feel so strong and powerful after a weight lifting session :D

Runner’s high is seriously like ecstasy!! It makes me feel on top of the world and totally unconquerable. My left knee is hurting like heckers and totally did NOT get high off of running 1 painful mile today :( Glad you are back in the running groove though!
