Odd One Out
Hi friends! How’s your weekend going? Yesterday, I had to work all day and then I drove to school to label my cat cadaver. My lab partner suggested a blog pic. But we both decided that you guys do not want to see that
Nursing school requires a few things that I am not completely comfortable with…. like disecting animals. However, I don’t think I have a problem with human cadavers because those are people who donated their bodies to science. The animals…don’t really have a say. I do want you to know that the cats used were not raised in a lab. According to my professor, they are strays from Mexico. I’m still not cool with it. But ya gotta do watcha gotta do sometimes. I did go on a second run and it was equally as glorious as the first! I was sore but not near as sore as I had expected that I would be. All of my stretching must have helped. I also engaged in my first session of Whittle My Middle!! This is a workout challenge from Angela at Oh She Glows. I will be doing 6-10 minutes of these ab exercises 5 days a week for the next month! I love it. My abs are sore already! I needed a good workout. Work was stressful today. The work itself wasn’t the problem. My boss made an inappropriate comment about my healthy eating habits. My co-workers eat fast food frequently, especially on weekends. They asked if I wanted something and I politely declined. I never want my peers (or anyone else) to feel guilty about their food choices so I never give a reason for declining fast food. My boss then made a very inappropriate comment. I won’t repeat it because I have many readers who are recovering from ED’s. I replied by explaining my reasons for eating a diet low of processed foods and free of fast food. I told her that I had found that I feel much better physically and emotionally when I eat properly and I want to set a good example for my daughter.

I think my boss felt bad about what she had said. She did act interested as she asked more questions about my lifestyle. I forget sometimes how rare it is for an American to eat a diet free of junk because he or she wants to. Most Americans only eat healthy foods to lose weight. Why not eat well to feel well? My co-workers were equally shocked when I admitted my reason for returning to my running workouts. I love to run! I do it because I love to do it and so does my body. One co-worker stated that she would only run if someone were chasing her. LOL
Do you find that you are the odd one out due to your healthy lifestyle?
I finally tried one of my new Kashi meals!

This was Sweet and Sour Chicken
It was okay. It was every bit as good as it’s processed counter part. I do like the overall flavor and texture so I would probably buy it again …on sale.
I would also like to try these if I win this giveaway!
Now, it’s time for a nice warm shower and more stretching of my legs! Oh those stretches feel so good!

Ugh, sorry about your boss. I hate that people feel it’s OK to comment on people’s diet and bodies. So inappropriate!
Your daughter’s Dorothy outfit is so precious! I was Dorothy one year when I was little and it was one of my fonded Halloween memories.
I’ve heard great things about Polar but I don’t own either, so I can’t say from experience. Garmin seems to be popular around blog world!
sorry to know that your boss made some not appropriate comment about your healthy lifestyle, i think people just tend to think the standard is the norm and what’s normal and criticize everything else. But that would not affect us determination to keep the healthy lifestyle right? just as you said, because it makes us feel good!
I use a polar for spinning class, for running I don’t use it because I usually run in a treadmill so I know how many miles.
Sorry about the boss thing – I have definitely had people at my old work make really inappropriate comments about my eating, too. I also had one woman who brought me a plate of meatballs & sloppy joe meat and said “here vegan eat this”. Seriously?!
I use a garmin for running, but I waited a good 3 years of running to get one because it’s definitely an investment haha. Something cheaper you might want to try is the nike+ pod. Although if you don’t have a nano, then I guess that would be a bigger investment as well
Good for you for standing up for yourself and your healthy ways! Also, thank you so much for being so completely sensitive to your readers in recovery. Personally, it takes a lot to trigger me, but I know that sometimes it does not take much to make sufferers feel very low.
I am usually the odd one out with me eating habits and I take a lot of grief for it at work–which actually IS triggering. It’s different when people say harsh things to your face. Ugh.
I am looking up the Whittle you Middle challenge—sounds interesting! xoxo
First of all, that ab workout looks awesome! I clicked on the link, because I wanted to give it a try, but I don’t have the proper equipment
Too bad. Maybe I’ll ask Santa for a ball!
The comment made by your boss, even though you didn’t say it directly, sounds like something I have faced numerous times. For me it’s more difficult because I did once have an ED so people assume since I eat very healthy I am trying to lose weight. IT’s just not the case. I try to explain that as an RD I really would like to practice what I preach, or else what’s the point? I think some people look up to those who eat really healthy, and wish they cold be more like that. INstead of accepting how we eat, they try to make us feel bad about it because they feel inferior. Not always, but that is the case sometimes. Good for you for standing up for what you believe, and keeping your cool.
wow lame about your boss- i hate it when people make inappropriate comments about what you eat! your daughter is so incredibly beautiful..and that kashi meal-ive tried it before..i wasnt too excited about it either!
I’m the odd one out at work also. Co-workers have never heard of hummus or Greek, yogurt before. They think my green smoothies sound and look weird. I don’t eat healthy just weight loss, but for my body to feel better and have energy. Sorry for the comments your boss made. Not everyone wants to eat junk food 24/7! Your daughter is too cute btw.
well I think it depends on teh situation as to say if I am the odd one out. I will say in college I was certainly the odd one out bc of my eating habits and it acutally created alot of drama and uncomfortable catty-ness between me and some of my friends, becuase of the way I ate….its like they looked down on me because I choose healthy dishes and food, it really frustrated me a lot. NOw, however I am a personal trainer/exercise specialist for a corporate fitness center and everyone that works for my company is very healthy so I am not the odd one out at all!
i cannot believe your boss! some people just don’t know how to properly filter their comments! I am so sorry you went through that!
I hope you are enjoying your day, J!
I hate when people make rude comments about healthy eating or make you explain yourself.. there is no need!
Sorry that your boss and coworkers were so rude about your healthy eating habits. You should be proud of them! I sometimes feel in the minority, but being around 33 other dietetic interns, I’m not judged as much. I think that people secretly admire those who choose to eat healthfully.
I want a Garmin, but a basic Target watch is good for getting started. I want a Garmin because I’m starting to do longer runs now, and I have no idea what my pace is or exactly how far I’m going. But I’ve run with a little Target watch FOREVER!
People make the weirdest assumptions b/c of one’s diet & lifestyle choices and usually they are dead wrong. It’s annoying and hurtful when comments get said that are totally offbase and hurtful in the process. Believe me, I am a GF, SF, vegan. I get my share. But it’s what works for my body. But yes, in certain circles I am soooo far the odd one out. When living in San Diego for the last 5 yrs (just moved to Phoenix) there were other people who were similar and/or just vegan and I had kinda found my tribe in real life. Now, starting over again finding those types….
I definitely feel like the odd one out especially with my roommates eating allllll sorts of stuff
Let’s just say we have VEEERY different diets.
Being vegan usually makes me the odd man out. People always have the strangest comments!
I could never dissect. I would have to leave the room because it just got me.
I am always the odd man out and made fun of. I’m not even that healthy I’ve had almost a whole box of Annie’s chocolate chip bunnies hop into my mouth tonight!
I LOVE to run too.
I totally know what you feel like in being the odd one out. We all feel that way sometimes, I think. But it’s hard to feel included when others aren’t practicing healthy habits.
I wrote about this one time…it reminds me of high school, every one watching in terms of insecurity and feelings of competition.
I wouldn’t buy a cheap watch. If you really want it, you should spend the money on it. What do you think it would ADD to your health?

i just tend to let inappropriate comments slide off. you know you are doing something good for YOU, and that is all that matters. love snuffy pictures. so. dayum. cute!
love you girl, and i agree, there is NOTHING like a running high
I’ve experienced people getting defensive when they hear I’m a nutritionist. One woman actually called me a “quack”. Huh?? How can anyone argue with eating healthily? My sense is that these people feel bad and wrong about themselves to begin with. When they see someone engaging in a healthy lifestyle they feel attacked, even if that wasn’t actually the case.
BODA lose weight
my co-workers make fun of me- they say i eat like a rabbit and pretend to “order food” for me when we are having lunch in days (mostly because of my multiple food allergies). i take it all in stride though and sometimes it is REALLY funny! They’ll say stuff like, “hey ann make sure amy’s has extra coconut!!!!” i know its all in fun and the only other girl in my department appreciates that although i eat very healthy at lunch and b-fast, i will never let her eat chocolate alone! even if its only a small piece!
I guess it would be different if i were working with all women, but guys tend not to say stupid comments out of cattyness and meanness, but rather to be goofy..
